Did You Know?
The Peaks of the Balkans trek isn’t just about breathtaking landscapes. Most places we stay serve simple, freshly cooked meals made just for us, using ingredients straight from nearby farms. These dishes offer a true taste of Balkan traditions and a chance to connect with the everyday life of the people who call these mountains home.
Day 1
Upon arriving in Tirana, we’ll meet the group and kick off our Balkan adventure. Our first stop is the historic Rozafa Castle in Shkodër, where we’ll explore its ancient walls and enjoy stunning views over the city and surrounding landscapes. After taking in the sights, we’ll head to a local restaurant for a delicious lunch in Shkodër. Following lunch, we’ll continue our journey to Plav, about 2.5 hours away, passing through Montenegro’s rural landscapes. Upon arrival, there’s plenty of time to explore the town at your own pace.
Day 2
Today marks the first stage of our trek, starting just outside Plav. We gradually ascend through dense beech forests along the mountain ridge. As we gain altitude, the landscape shifts, with towering conifers like pines and firs becoming more prominent at 2000 meters. At the summit, we’re rewarded with a panoramic view of the vast, forest-covered hills — a true embodiment of "Montenegro," the Land of Black Mountains. In the afternoon, we arrive at a tranquil mountain lake, perfect for a refreshing break and swim before we leisurely descend to Babino Polje.
Approx. 17 km with 980m ascent and 580m descent
Day 3 After a hearty breakfast, we set off to climb the ridge that separates Montenegro from Kosovo. With every step, new horizons open up, revealing breathtaking mountain ranges all around us. At the highest point of the pass, we turn south and follow the border toward Albania. After one last ascent, we reach the tri-border point of Albania, Kosovo, and Montenegro at 2366 meters — an unforgettable highlight of the trek. From here, we descend into the peaceful high valley of Dobërdol, where we’re welcomed by the warm hospitality of local farmers. The accommodation is simple yet authentic — a modest and truly genuine mountain experience. about 13 km, ~1325m ascent, ~1100m descent. Day 4 The day begins in the picturesque high valley of Dobërdol, an isolated spot surrounded by rural farms. Our route winds along the mountainsides, revealing breathtaking panoramas of the surrounding peaks and mystical conifer forests. After a gentle ascent, we reach the Qafa e Aljucit Pass, where we enjoy a well-deserved break. Refreshed, we continue through the impressive mountain scenery until we finally reach the idyllic high valley of Cerem. Here, we unwind in a charming chalet, savoring the views of the valley while traditional Albanian cuisine treats us with its authentic flavors and hearty dishes. about 15 km, ~400m ascent, ~800m descent. Day 5 Today we head straight back into the high mountains, surrounded by the towering peaks of this remote region. Crossing once more into Montenegro, we reach the Borit Pass, opening up to a secluded karst plateau framed by impressive summits. This is by far the least-visited area of the entire trek — far removed from any form of mass tourism. The route rewards us with exceptional panoramic views before descending toward the valley of Vusanje. Depending on the group’s preference, we can either take the gentler descent and enjoy coffee with local farmers or follow a more scenic ridge path that leads to a steeper descent. about 15.2 km, ~1170m ascent, ~1430m descent. Day 6 Our final stage — and a true gem of the journey. The trail leads us through the stunning Ropojana Valley, part of the Prokletije National Park, passing a picturesque village with a waterfall and a deep-blue spring. Often called the Stechelberg of Montenegro, this valley is framed by steep limestone walls and dramatic peaks reminiscent of the Dolomites. Gradually, we ascend toward the Ropojansko Jezero — a lake that almost always dries out during summer. Crossing the border into Albania for the last time, we continue toward Pejes. Along the way, remnants of Albania’s isolated past appear: abandoned bunkers guarding this once-sealed frontier. The final descent into Theth is steep and demanding, but it rewards us with a wonderful guesthouse and the perfect ending to our journey. about 22 km, ~1000m ascent, ~1100m descent. Day 7 To conclude our journey, we explore the charming corners of Theth on foot before heading to one of the region’s highlights — the Blue Eye (Syri i Kalter). This crystal-clear spring, just about an hour’s walk away, invites us to take a refreshing dip in its turquoise waters. After this natural experience, we share one last traditional meal together before making our way toward Tirana. Between 5 and 6 p.m., we bid farewell to our guests at the airport, where our journey comes to an end.
In 2025, an unexpected snowfall took us by surprise – truly unusual for that time of year. It added a beautiful twist to our journey, but to avoid a repeat, we’ve scheduled the next departure a little earlier in the season.
