Did you know?
Greenland is only the Danish name for this vast Arctic land. The Inuit people call it Kalaallit Nunaat [kaˈlaːɬːit nuˈnaːt], which means “Land of the Kalaallit”—the native Greenlandic people. Embark on a journey to meet locals, fish side by side, and share a meal the Greenlandic way!
Day 1
We’ll gather at Copenhagen Airport, check in together, and use the time to get to know each other as a group. Our five-hour flight takes us to Nuuk, Greenland’s capital. With the three-hour time difference on our side, we’ll still have enough of the evening left to enjoy a shared dinner at our Airbnb.
Day 2
Our first full day in Greenland takes us northeast from Nuuk into the beautiful Paradise Valley. From there, we’ll ascend Ukkusissaq, a peak steeped in local legend and natural beauty. According to Inuit mythology, it is known as the “Mountain of Spirits,” said to be watched over by ancient beings. From the summit, breathtaking views open up across fjords, rugged peaks, and endless wilderness. After a packed lunch at the top, we’ll descend and take a shortcut back to town, where a taxi will return us to our Airbnb.
10 km, ~722m ascent/descent
Day 3 We’ll spend the entire day exploring Nuuk. In the morning, we’ll visit the Greenland National Museum, home to the famous Qilakitsoq mummies and fascinating insights into the island’s past. Afterwards, a local guide will take us on a city walk through Nuuk, from the old harbor with its colorful houses to the modern Katuaq Cultural Center. Along the way, we’ll see how people here balance tradition with contemporary life. For lunch, we’ll enjoy a local meal together before wrapping up the day with more impressions of Greenland’s capital. ~city stroll Day 4 Today we’ll head out into the fjords surrounding Nuuk. In Viking times, this was one of the first settled regions outside the southern tip of Greenland. Scattered across the landscape are the ruins of old farmsteads, which we’ll reach by boat and explore on foot. As we hike through this historic area, we’ll also gain a sense of how small communities continue to live here today. 12 km, ~250m ascent/descent Day 5 Our last full day in Nuuk takes us on a boat trip into the magnificent fjord system. Departing from the old colonial harbor, we’ll cruise past impressive peaks and floating icebergs before reaching the mighty Narsap Sermia glacier, which spills down from the Greenland Ice Sheet. If conditions allow, we’ll get close enough to admire its white and crystal-blue face while sipping hot tea or coffee. It’s an unforgettable way to end our stay in Greenland’s capital. ~boat tour Day 6 It’s time to change basecamp as we take our flight to Kangerlussuaq. In Greenland, there are no roads between towns – only planes and boats connect the settlements. After arriving, we’ll set out on a tundra safari, driving the country’s longest road toward the edge of the immense ice sheet. Along the way, we’ll watch for musk oxen, reindeer, and Arctic hares before returning in the evening to explore the town’s unique atmosphere. ~ice sheet tour Day 7 Today’s adventure takes us to Lake Ferguson, nestled in the tundra. If pedal boats are available, we’ll spend an hour gliding across the water before continuing on foot toward Garnet Mountain. Here, we’ll have the chance to search for bright red garnet stones in the rocky terrain – a hands-on connection with Greenland’s geology. Musk oxen are often spotted in the area, adding to the day’s excitement. We’ll return to Kangerlussuaq in the evening. 16 km, ~150m ascent/descent Day 8 This morning we fly to Ilulissat, the jewel of the north and our final base. After settling into our guesthouse, we’ll head out into Disko Bay for a whale safari. Surrounded by towering icebergs, we’ll look for the giants of the sea that migrate thousands of kilometers to feed here. With a bit of luck, we’ll enjoy unforgettable encounters before returning to town for the evening. ~whale safari Day 9 Today we dedicate ourselves to the Icefjord south of Ilulissat. The trail leads us along a fjord filled with countless icebergs, creating a surreal and ever-changing panorama. Before reaching the Icefjord Center, we’ll stop for lunch – and with some luck, whales may pass right in front of the icebergs. In the afternoon, those who wish can extend the hike west of Ilulissat for sweeping views of Disko Bay, while others may prefer to explore the town at their own pace. about 7 km, ~175m ascent/descent Day 10 We’ll spend the day in Ilulissat itself. In the morning, we’ll visit the local museum to gain deeper insight into the town’s history and culture. In the afternoon, we’ll join local Inuit for hands-on experiences – from bone and reindeer antler carving to weaving with musk oxen wool. These traditions offer a glimpse into the skills and creativity that have been passed down through generations. ~village visit Day 11 On our final long hike, we’ll make our way to the nearby settlement of Oqaatsut. The trail offers stunning views of Disko Bay, with frequent chances to spot whales along the way. After a picnic en route, we’ll arrive at the colorful village, where our local friend Jan welcomes us for a traditional “kaffemik.” Together we’ll share stories and enjoy a barbecue before returning to Ilulissat by boat, savoring the scenery one last time. 15–18 km, ~230m ascent/descent (can be shortened on request) Day 12 Saturday morning marks the end of our journey. You’re welcome to use the lodge until noon, leaving time to relax, reflect, and enjoy your final moments in Ilulissat. As we say farewell, we take with us not only memories of vast landscapes and shared adventures but also the warmth of new friendships forged along the way. ~departure
