Journey into Iceland’s Wild Heart

Welcome to Laugavegur! Echo tours is thrilled to share with you the wonders of this extraordinary Icelandic landscape, where rugged trails reveal vibrant colours, steaming geothermal areas, and vast, untouched wilderness. Here, where fire meets ice, we’ll embrace the elements together. Following a north-to-south route, we’ll enjoy a lower overall ascent, with each day’s stages set at a moderate, comfortable pace.

Day 1
Welcome to Reykjavík! Our journey begins with a 4-hour bus ride to Landmannalaugar, where we’ll spend our first night. This vibrant area is a destination in itself, with stunning geothermal landscapes to explore. In the evening, we’ll gather over dinner to discuss the adventure ahead and answer any questions. Don’t forget your swimwear—the nearby hot springs offer a perfect start to our journey! Optional short hikes around the campground are available.

Day 2
After breakfast, we embark on our trek! Today’s focus is on Iceland’s volcanic heritage. The trail leads us past steam vents and ancient lava fields, with vivid colours accompanying us as we ascend 500 meters to Hrafntinnusker. Here, the high alpine landscape sets an unforgettable scene for our overnight stay.

11 km, ~500 m ascent

Day 3 Continuing through elevated terrain, we descend toward Lake Álftavatn. Today’s changing landscapes are truly spectacular—from moss-green valleys to rugged, lava-black plains. We’ll be treated to breathtaking views on our descent before setting up camp at Álftavatn. Be prepared to cross our first stream, so waterproof boots are essential! 11 km, ~450 m descent Day 4 With striking lava domes as our backdrop, we’ll cross two streams and then enter a black sand desert. This barren landscape leaves a lasting impression and reminds us of the stark contrasts in Icelandic nature. Tonight, we camp in a beautiful canyon setting. 16 km, ~150 m ascent / 250 m descent Day 5 Our final destination is just a day’s hike away! Today, we’ll navigate canyons, rivers, and one last water crossing before reaching Þórsmörk. It’s inspiring to see nature reclaiming the land as small trees and bushes guide us toward our last night’s stay. 15 km, ~300 m ascent / 550 m descent Day 6 After breakfast in Þórsmörk, we have a few hours to soak in the beauty around us. A gentle stroll or a quick climb to Valahnjúkur could be the perfect finish to our journey. Around noon, the bus will arrive to take us back to Reykjavík, where we’ll bid farewell. You’ll leave with a sense of pride at all you’ve accomplished!
