Did You Know?
Seiland National Park is one of Norway’s best-kept secrets, offering untouched wilderness with dramatic cliffs, pristine beaches, and no marked trails. It remains a hidden gem, far from the typical tourist path, where only the most adventurous travelers venture.
Day 1
Hammerfest welcomes us far above the Arctic Circle with its unique charm. Our welcoming committee? The local reindeer, roam freely through the streets. After introductions, we set off on a three-and-a-half-hour drive to the North Cape. Standing on the cliffs, we take in the sweeping views, snap photos, and watch seabirds in flight. With our tents on our backs, we hike to Knivskjellodden—the true northernmost point. Sheltered by natural formations, we set up camp for the night, marking our northernmost overnight stay on mainland Europe.
~10.5 km, 300m descent
Since the weather at the North Cape can be unpredictable, we may adjust the itinerary to visit Seiland before heading to the North Cape, depending on accommodation availability. This way, we increase our chances of experiencing the North Cape with clear views!
Day2
After a hearty breakfast, we bid farewell to the North Cape. Hiking through sparse Arctic vegetation, we make our way back to the car. A three-and-a-half-hour drive brings us back to Hammerfest, where we settle into our hotel for the next two nights. The afternoon offers time to explore the town, including a visit to learn about the Struve Geodetic Arc, which culminates here in Hammerfest.
~7.6km, 300m ascent
Day3 Equipped with just our daypacks, we set off to explore the island of Seiland. In the morning, we take the car ferry across to the island. From Hønsebybotn, we follow a trail leading into the national park. Compared to the North Cape, the climate here is noticeably milder, reflected in the abundance of plant life. Our hike takes us to the end of Storvannet, a perfect spot for a refreshing midday swim. We return to Hammerfest by ferry in the evening. max. 14km, 250m ascent/descent Seiland captivates with its nearly untouched nature, a place still undiscovered by mainstream tourism. Marked trails lead to the edge of the national park, but from there, it’s up to you to explore the wilderness on your own! Day4 The first flight takes us back to Tromsø, where we enjoy a morning tea or coffee in the city before continuing our journey by car. After a scenic two-hour drive, we arrive at Signaldalen, the starting point for today’s hike. The trail ascends steadily, beautifully situated in a valley carved by a lively river. As we climb higher, we leave behind the lush vegetation of bushes and trees, transitioning into a tundra-like landscape. By the time we reach the Gappohytta cabin, the golden light of the sun bathes the surroundings, creating a breathtakingly peaceful scene. A nearby lake offers a refreshing swim while dinner is prepared. Please note: The flight to Tromsø is not included in the trip price. ~11km sowie 600m ascent Day5 A beautiful day’s stage along the Swedish border awaits us. We traverse the high plateau, moving eastward, surrounded by expansive vistas that stretch as far as the eye can see. Along the way, we cross several rivers with crystal-clear water, perfect for a quick refresh or to simply marvel at their purity. Soon, we catch sight of Golddajávri Lake, which we circle after a gradual descent. The trail then leads us through a sparse birch forest, a serene transition that guides us to the Goldahytta, our cozy shelter for the night. For those eager to explore further, an optional hike to the iconic three-country cairn can be undertaken today. ~12km, 50m ascent / 200m descent Day6 The final day brings with it the last great highlight of our journey. After a hearty breakfast, we set off toward the three-country cairn, where Norway, Sweden, and Finland converge. Here, we celebrate the success of our adventure together. But the day has only just begun. Crossing the border into Finland, the trail leads us over a ridge, offering spectacular views along the way. On the other side, we meet our vehicle, ready to take us back to Tromsø. For those who prefer a more relaxed option, the Finnish side offers a boat service, allowing you to skip part of the hike and enjoy the scenery from the water. ~14km, 300m Aufstieg/Abstieg
